How to Maintain Your Wood Fence

Wood fence panels need to be kept up, whether they’ve been broken, decayed or need to be restained or sealed. Semi-regular upkeep is among the costs related with panel fencing. Vinyl, on the other hand, might not need the same care, but it doesn’t have the same appeal as a wooden fence. Assuming that your wooden fence is already up and functional, you will learn how often you should stain or seal your fence panels in addition to how to protect it from termites. Having this information will help you keep your wooden fence in tiptop shape and lasting for a long time.

Fence Damage Repair

Part of preserving a wood fence is repairing any damage that panels may suffer. A wood fence could be damaged in any number of ways: rotting, breaking or other mishaps. Keep on top of the repair by taking out the damaged panel and replacing it. An advantage of wood panel fencing is that you can fix or replace single pieces instead of the whole fence. Repair might include repainting a worn piece, or it could involve replacing an entire panel. Either way, it’s a job that you can get done in a few hours.

Staining and Sealing Your Fence

If you do not paint your wooden fence panels, they must be sealed from the elements. Staining gives panels a hint of coloring while keeping a natural wood look. Because the climate deviates from region to region, precisely how often you must reseal and stain will devolve on the weather. In rainy areas you will likely need to do it more often than in if you live in an arid region. Instead of relying on a specific time frame, base your decision on the wood itself. As a rule, when water no longer beads up on the wooden fence but soaks in, it’s time to reseal. Again, how long sealant will endure will depend upon the weather, In a damp climate, resealing should be done roughly every 2 years. Staining will have some of the properties of a sealant, but you should always seal prior to staining.

Termite Control

Termites, also known as white ants, are harmful pests that can virtually eat you out of house and home. Softwoods such as redwood, pine, fir and cedar are all most sensitive to termite infestation. Unfortunately, those are the types of woods most likely to be used for fences. Termites can be destroyed by a professional service, but you’ll be able to do it yourself by using borax, a potent natural insecticide. Borax is also much less toxic than alternative insecticides.

Study termite prevention first, and you might not have to exterminate. Termites need moist soil to survive and work to eat through softwoods that are partially buried. If your wood fence has parts that are buried, try digging them out and keeping the fence entirely open to the air. If you get rid of the wood from the termites’ habitat, they won’t be able to ruin a wood fence.

Preventative measures can help you maintain your wooden fence panels and the timing for restaining and resealing panels will depend on the climate.

Professional Job, I would recommend Antonio and his crew for any job, residential or commercial. The fence is built better than the original with extra posts where there were none originally.

Being in construction for over 30 years, I can see that his work is excellent! I will be refering him to others.
